Two easy pH tests to try at home. Are you sometimes asked if you are Alkaline or Acid?
Sometimes a client will want to know their pH. There may be a belief that we have just one pH at any given time and we would like that to be optimum and hopefully it is alkaline…
There is NO singular optimum pH for our bodies – every fluid and organ has it’s own optimum pH. For example, the skin has a subtly acid surface; urine can be all over the place as it is eliminating what is not required; saliva should be right at 7.0 so that there is no acid that can erode tooth enamel, and so forth.
Actually our body has as many optimal pH’s as we have organs and tissues and fluids – all varying and all dancing together brilliantly to keep all of those unique pH’s at their optimum functionality and especially one fluid in particular – your blood – which all systems of our body are in support of – keeping our blood pH just right – or as close to optimal as it possibly can as it has such a small window.
The range is 7.35 to 7.55 (both numbers are slightly alkaline). The closer to the first number the healthier you are – generally speaking.
If your blood were to be acidic, as one will read often on the internet, then you are a corpse!
Our pH cannot be forced one way or the other with supplements – our body has an automatic self-levelling system – and many things going on at once – as well as back-up programmes. (Another internet conception is that by changing one’s pH cancer will diminish! This implies that a great imbalance in some specific tissues and functions, combined with important underlying emotional un-resolved issues, can be over-ridden with alkaline foods and greens and powdered drinks).
There’s a simplistic but lucrative belief, for example, that cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline environment and from this premise assumptions are made that a good anti-cancer diet would be all about alkaline water and alkaline forming foods – preferably raw. How that is allowed to stand by Health Canada and naturopaths baffles me!
Cancer cells cannot be thwarted by creating an alkaline environment from one that was deemed acidic – I couldn’t possibly have drank enough alkaline water to reverse my breat tumour. Cancer cells are actually more alkaline internally than their regular neighbouring healthy cells but have extra highly acidic fluids surrounding them, externally, which are eased away and mix in eventually with the rest of the extra-cellular fluids.
Lithium chloride, cesium chloride and baking soda are falsely seen as cancer fighters but don’t do anything at all, as these substances are first met by stomach acid where they become neutralized and morfed / shifted into by products such as sodium chloride, carbon dioxide and carbonic acid / formic acid / unwanted toxins, etc. And if enough is taken one could become hyper-chloritic and even suffer from acidicosis.
The baking soda that the world famous Dr Tullio Simoncini uses is not given as a drink or injected into a vein (as one idiot naturopath in Vancouver did when Dr Simoncini was all the rage!) but he actually injected baking soda directly into the tumour mass itself – and that has nothing to do with alkalinizing the blood or all of the body’s fluids or changing the pH of healthy organs and tissue – but has everything to do with wreaking havoc on the cancer cells specifically by way of osmotic shifts with a strong assault to the tumour’s interior. Foreign clinics are also known to do this with localized and specific therapy with ozone and laetrile. (Lots of mis-information on this type of intervention in some published studies).
Kangen water – made with very expensive MLM-marketed equipment and also available in special water stores – makes alkaline and acidic water. But alkaline water may not have a healthy place at all in our bodies. The acidic water (not why people buy the expensive equipment) that it makes can prove to be useful – body and hair spray, cleaning surfaces, etc.
Methylation is essential for many health functions such as helping with repair of DNA. We want to have robust stomach acids to help perform this complex methylation. Methylation also comes about with the help of choline and trimethylglycine (in beetroot).
Stomach acid is precious and should not be destroyed. It is assumed that it keeps regenerating itself immediately when altered – pronto. This does occur but requires an interplay of B6, B12, folate and more valuable acids. When there is enough acidity in the stomach, then we have the healthy benefit of methylation. Acid in the stomach breaks down the food and a lack of stomach acid stops the enzymes that are part of this process from performing properly. In fact the stomach doesn’t even begin to empty out into the gut until it has reached a certain acidic level.
By alkalinizing the stomach fluids and pushing the pH up with alkaline water, even without any intention of eating, the stomach bacteria are no longer there to protect against incoming pathogens, as they need the acidic environment to work right. Methylation is then also decreased and then DNA is less likely to be repaired; then there is less uptake of certain nutrients; and less ability to fight specific pathogens.
Even the beneficial acids in some fruits and vegetables are neutralized when eaten while drinking alkaline water. You want these foods to be broken down naturally and Mother Nature will then add alkalinizing enzymes from the fruits themselves into the stomach chyme. Those enzymes won’t work as well when not in their acidic stomach environment. When the chyme has been worked on sufficiently it passes into the small intestine… one teaspoon every three seconds or so. THEN this chyme is alkalinized by enzymes from the pancreas – in the small intestine – not earlier.
Celery doesn’t heal us because of it’s politically correct pH, but because of the healthy compounds and the fibres which break down by the gut bacteria (their idea of yummy – insoluble fibre) which eventually help with the healing processes elsewhere in the body.
Generally acids are essential, and some are key – such as polyphenols, malic acid, betulinic acid from shaga mushrooms and even uric acid (generally the body’s greatest anti-oxidant).
For example, wild animals can eat rotting meat because they have incredibly high stomach acid…
Ammonia is a highly alkaline substance and is created in our GI tract by some highly unwelcome gut bacteria so they can live there more happily… as they need it.

Want to alkalinize? Just hyper ventilate. That’ll blow off lots of carbon di-oxide / carbonic acid and create a subtle shift in pH!
There are two tests we can do at home that can help show us where our general pH is at – and by that we mean if there is enough mineralization.
One easy to do pH test is the saliva test – it shows us if we have enough electrolytes on board and that’s a good general indicator.
You must do this test several hours after a meal. Thoroughly wet the end of a pH paper with your saliva, compare the colour with the pH dispenser and then record it.
At a pH of 6.0 or less you have a serious depletion of electrolytes and you’ll want to be careful not to exercise, fast or cleanse too rigourously until your reserves are replenished, pronto.
At 6.1 – 6.3 you can be considered depleted and still you’ll need to support an improvement.
At 6.4 – 6.8 you are good to go.
Over 6.9 or higher – you’ll want to do this test again – excited? stressed? and it means that something may have interfered affecting your saliva (or parasites, infections, drugs, etc.).
So after you’ve taken the first part of the test – above – you’ll squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon into two ounces of water and drink this (without sweeteners of course). Swish the lemon juice in your mouth, too, before swallowing it. Wait one minute and then take six saliva readings – one after the other.
A 8.0 pH or higher means you passed! Your liver’s stored electrolytes were able to buffer the acids in your mouth from the lemon juice.
7.5 – 8.0 – could be better and your electrolytes should be increased.
7.0 – 7.4 – indicates that you have a tad of electrolyte reserve that really needs beefing up.
Increase your minerals with your food choices such as serious homemade bone broths; some herbal teas; vegetable dishes; vegetable smoothies.
Test again after a few days.
6.9 or less – some outside help might be useful! and take fasting and cleansing slowly and delicately after the rebuilding of your electrolyte supply.
An easy urine test
This requires a day of alkalinizing: only vegetables and their juices (no grains, nuts, coffee, regular teas, meat, dairy, fruit) and only a bit of gentle exercise. Then, the next morning, wet your pH paper midstream.
7.0 or above – flying colours!
6.5 – 7.0 – some depletion of electrolytes.
5.6 – 6.4 – acid accumulation is greater than the electrolyte reserves. Focusing on replenishing is really important and healing will improve
below 5.6 – do not attempt any fasts or cleanses and focus on alkalinizing foods and healing momentum will increase and ailments will heal more
And just to complicate matters – your truer readings are when you do these tests before you start a fast or cleanse. Once you are in a deep, serious cleansing mode and removing old stored acids and mucus membrane, your true electrolyte status will be off and inaccurate.
Rebuilding These Alkaline Reserves:
* eat the organically – as mass commercially grown produce is deficient in minerals and other nutrients
* overindulge in fresh vegetable smoothies (if vegetable juice is store bought then it is pasteurized = heat treated which kills all the natural enzymes on board as well as most of the vitamins and these all need each other to work together)
* drink vegetable broth made from the pulp that is left over from juicing (if you must) to extract the last of the life-giving minerals (or if you are creative in the kitchen, then you can make veggie crackers from the pulp, too)
* supplement with electrolytes
* indulge in lots of homemade bone broth (see article)
