- Food, Inc. (2008 documentary film), directed by Robert Kenner, raises alarms about both the industrial production of meats (chicken, beef and pork) and the modern methods used to grow grains and vegetables (primarily corn and soybeans). It discusses the dominance of the American food market by a handful of huge corporations, which work to keep consumers from being aware of how their food is produced. These companies promote unhealthy food consumption habits and then supply cheap, inadequate, genetically-modified food that is produced and transported using methods that exploit livestock, employees, farmers and the environment while using large amounts of petroleum products.
- Super Size Me (2004 documentary film), directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock, an American independent filmmaker. Spurlock follows a 30-day period during which he ate only McDonald’s food three times per day and eating every item on the chain’s menu at least once and documents the drastic effect on Spurlock’s physical and psychological health explores the fast food industry’s corporate influence on poor nutrition for its own profit and gain. Spurlock gained 24.5 pounds, a 13% body mass increase, increased his cholesterol to 230 mg/dL (6.0 mmol/L) and experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction and fat accumulation in his liver.
- Forks over Knives (2011 documentary film), a documentary that advocates a low-fat, whole-food, plant-based diet that excludes all animal products and overly refined and processed foods, including refined sugars, bleached flours, and oils, and instead promotes eating whole grains, legumes, tubers, vegetables, and fruits. The claim is that many diseases as well as obesity can be prevented. The film includes an overview of the 20-year China–Cornell–Oxford Project (a large observational study conducted throughout the 1980s in rural China – a partnership between Cornell University, the University of Oxford, and the government of China – comparing the health consequences and diets rich in animal-based foods to diets rich in plant-based foods among people who were genetically similar.
