1. WHAT IS REIKI HEALING?

As advanced quantum energy concepts have become more mainstream, it is easier for us to accept that everything in the universe is energy and vibration – and that we are energy and vibration, too (including our thoughts, emotions). Our bodies consist of energy – different frequencies for different organs and tissues. The lower the frequency of energy, the more solid it appears. For example, our bones, which are vibrating at a lower frequency than our red blood cells are perceived to be more solid. Our emotions and thoughts are also energy – love has a much higher frequency than fear, for example.

2. AN ABBREVIATED HISTORY OF REIKI – THE ORIGINS

Mikao Usui, Sensei, the founder and ultimate Teacher of Reiki, was born in 1865, near Kyoto, Japan. He was a very spiritual man – a man who took his daily religious and meditation exercises very seriously. In 1921 his deep devotion, advanced personal searching and life experiences and a particular profound Satori during a sacred retreat on Mount Kurama, culminated into advanced insights and an even more focussed way of energy transference that we now call Reiki.
Master Usui had numerous students of varing levels of proficiency and dedication who learned meditation in groups throughoout Japan but mainly in the Tokyo and Kyoto area.

Reiki is a Japanese word, made up of two Japanese kanji – Rei and Ki – meaning, roughly translated, universal and energy. The word Reiki is often translated as “Universal Life Force Energy” or “Spiritual Ray of Life”.

During the early twentieth century in Japan, during Master Usui’s time, the ancient art of hands-on-healing was enjoying a Renaissance. Healing, so much a part of shamanistic practice in all parts of the world for thousands of years, was also known in Japan. There were many different types of healing forms achieved through meditation and energy transference and gradually “touch” was also being practised by various teachers affiliated with the accepted spiritual traditions at that time. As Master Usui’s insights, classes and healing work spread, other teachers of other healing modalities shared their knowledge with each other and with him. We now know that Master Usui’s Reiki was not a rigid or static method but evolved, gradually, over those last five years of his life and with the help of practitioners close to him. Master Usui died in 1926.

3. THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE ART OF REIKI & HEALING

Reiki is often seen as a healing “art”. But what actually happens scientifically?

In the May 2002 issue of “EXPLORE! For The Professional”, an article by Timothy Ley on Peak Performance describes entrainment. Two people, in close quarters, had their brain waves measured and described. One person showed a new heightened ability to achieve at golf. It was passed on (passively) by being in the close and personal presence of the other person ~ a golf pro with a heightened awareness and focus for golf (…and high scores).

In another situation a happy and energetic child’s brain waves were measured before and after spending several days of heartfelt and close communication with a depressed adult. The child’s brain wave had become chaotic and similar to that of the unhappy adult ~ energy and information transfer without even touching! Much like the energy that flows with healing except for the absense of intention, focus and knowing. We can conclude that one’s energy level, brain pattern and state of being are oh so powerful and contagious ~ neuron transfer ~ entrainment!

4. SHARING REIKI – Organising a Reiki Share / Reiki Exchange

If, as a Reiki practitioner or teacher, you feel a strong commitment to your students to share in the wonderfulness of the practice of Reiki, then hosting a Share or EXCHANGE might be just the project for you! This can be a new and rewarding way to practice Reiki, keep friends and practitioners enthused and create an opportunity to socialise with like-minded people ~ not always possible in our hurried world. Reiki shares would surely have been talked about in your Reiki classes and here are a few more thoughts.

Some students of Reiki feel that they may have become “rusty” and this gets them back into the swing of things. Questions about what may be happening during a session and chatting about the finer points that have been forgotten, by some, will automatically flow from this afterwards.

If you are a recent arrival to energy work, then organising a Reiki Share is a good way to stay enthusiastic after your recent initiation. You may wish to team up with a veteran. Ask a more experienced person to be there, too, as there may be some sticky wickets ~ people bringing advertising, people talking incessently, willy-nilly attunements being handed out, etc. Focussed, quiet and powerful Reiki Healing should be the focus. The requirement for you is merely to provide space, time, clear intention and persistence. And this is where the experienced guide helps the host, the captain as it were, who keeps the group on-track, positive and focused.

5. Questions About DISTANCE HEALING You Might Not Have Asked

Reiki distance healing sessions at Pacific Holistic with Reiki Master Merrie Bakker
questions about distance Reiki

Have you ever wondered how people can claim to send distance healing energy? And really wondered how this can be done when all the healer has is a name, a challenge, and maybe a city somewhere close by or far away? Can these healers’ claims be real? Why not just send healing with just initials or no name at all?
How much information does one need to be effective, if at all, to send distance healing? Is it personal and different for every healer or is there really a science to it with a few serious consistent basics to be adhered to, so as to not create doubt or an appearance of “hit or miss”?

When I look at how different energy work teachers I have had the privilege of studying with, were sending healing energy, then I saw a pattern that distinguished what worked from what didn’t work at all and what was even just wishful thinking. Then I put this to the test myself with experiments (including with the help of an energetic calibrator and advanced equipment with Dr. Wallace Heath) and to see how qualitatively productive it was for me and for the “receiving” persons in my experiments.

6. A MEDITATION FOR CANCER AND AIDS

Allow yourself to be in a comfortable position where you will not be disturbed. You may choose to listen to this tape every day for at least thirty days in a row for powerful, positive change.
Take a long, slow deep breathe and close your eyes. As you take another long, slow deep breath, tell your body to relax. See, sense and feel that you are walking along a sandy beach. Feel the warmth of the sand beneath your feet and smell the fresh salt breeze as it blows against your cheek. You find a place up from the beach to relax and stretch out on the warm, healing sand. Cradle your body into the sand, moving so that you are more comfortable, nurtured and supported by the healing sand.

The warm, healing sun is just above your head. (CROWN)
Guide that warm, healing light down into the top of your head. Feel the warm sweet healing energy of the sun as it flows down into your forehead… continued https://pacific-holistic.com/reiki/meditation

7. SOME COMMON Q & A’S ABOUT LEARNING REIKI:

I’m often asked how much time a Reiki class should take – why are some classes 4 hours and others 16 hours.

A The simplest explanation I have is that there is a lot to cover. The history is important. There are many important events and people that have shaped the Reiki we practice in the West today. There is some misinformation, too, which needs to be addressed. More knowledge means more clarity and respect for the work.
Back in the 1920’s when Reiki got it’s start in Japan, the students were completely conversant with meridians and chakras and here we are not. So this little parcel of knowledge needs to be incorporated into a class. Over time we have learned that there are some quick and unique methods of learning how to “run energy” that are completely aligned with the ability to pass on energy, as Master Usui encouraged his students to do. This needs a certain amount of time, in a thorough and modern Reiki class to be taught correctly. Other aspects, such as centring, focussing, learning how to scan, entrainment and protecting oneself from taking on the client’s issues and / or challenges can be learned through trial and error by students but are much better when taught and practised so that there is no “by the seat of the pants” type experiences of poor learning.

Some people have asked me whether I suggest taking Level One and Two at the same time and if not, then how much time should be spaced in between each level.

Historically, Master Usui and his teachers did not have weekend courses but students came together one evening per week to the group sessions where meditation and Reiki were combined. It would not be unusual to be in a certain level group for many years. one progressed over the course of one’s dedicated life’s practice. So, when I’m asked if I teach the classic Usui system, I have to wonder if that potential student has eight years to spare!

In present Western Reiki we know that some thorough type of classes of Level One are all a student really needs – for working with friends and pets and plants and family is a fine set of tools. Level One Reiki is ALWAYS about working with oneself and others.
If working with clients is your goal – working more in-depth, working in challenging situations, etc, – then Level Two is important to add, in time. Mrs. Takata, who is the main teacher who brought Reiki to the West, is known to have students return for Level Two after a year but also to offer it to students who were keen, from out of town, and for whom she had a really good intuitive feeing that they could do their Level Two after a week of time in-between these two levels (and with lots of practice during that time).
She showed that there were no hard and fast rules.
Each student and teacher uses their inner guidance for the right answer. Some Reiki organisations have rules. This facilitates keeping things on an even keel but is not in the original spirit.

One head’s up that I learned the hard way. I was so concerned with getting it right and helping others that I neglected to work on myself initially – and that’s also a bit of avoidance that needs attention for a lot of us….
Working on oneself often is a very valuable component of learning and improving and gaining confident hands.

9. A REBUTTAL TO THE SILLIEST OF CRITICISMS OF REIKI

A rebuttal to the silliest criticism of Reiki we have ever encountered.
Here follows a summation and a portion of the approved report by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Administrative Committee entitled: “Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki as Alternative Therapy”.
in it’s entirety it can be found at http://www.usccb.org/about/doctrine/publications/upload/evaluation-guidelines-finaltext-2009-03.pdf – by the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, March 26, 2009 – (please note that this piece was not concocted in the dark ages!).

Here follow the most important excerpts:

  • “Reiki therapy, an alternative energy medicine originating in Japan, is unscientific and inappropriate for use by Catholic hospitals, clinics and retreat centers and people representing the Church,
  • “For a Catholic to believe in Reiki therapy presents insoluble problems,” the committee’s guidelines said. “In terms of caring for one’s physical health or the physical health of others, to employ a technique that has no scientific support (or even plausibility) is generally not prudent.”

The bishops said the technique — which involves a Reiki practitioner laying hands on a fully clothed client – also is encouraged as a “spiritual” kind of healing, but that for Christians “access to divine healing” comes through prayer to God.
A Catholic who puts his or her trust in Reiki “would be operating in the realm of superstition,” they claim.

10. JAPANESE REIKI WORDS AND PHRASES

Byosen – scanning to find energetically imbalanced body parts / systems for the source of an illness or injury (Byosen Reikan Ho scanning)

Byosen Reikan Ho – a method of scanning for disease – can be detected with hands, but will vary depending on the severity and condition from person-to-person – literally means energy sensation of sickness (imbalance/disease). Byo means ‘disease, sickness’ and Sen means ‘before, ahead, previous, future, precedence’, Rei means ‘energy, soul, spirit’ and kan means ‘emotion, feeling, sensation’; detecting sensations such as tingling, tickling, pulsating, piercing, biting, pain, numbness, heat, cold and so forth.

Chakra Kassei Kokyu-ho – a breathing technique to activate the chakras which sends Reiki to the whole body and activates the chakras; literal translation of Chakra Kassei Kokyu ho is ‘breathing method to activate the chakras’ …

11. THE FIVE TIBETAN RITES FOR “YOUTHING”

The Five Tibetan Rites, the Five Tibetans, also known as the Five Rites of Rejuvenation, were first written about by Peter Kelder in a 1939 publication entitled: The Eye of Revelation. In it he describes how the exercises came to the West early in the last century century, compliments of a retired British army officer, who learned them, possibly, in the Himalayas.
These Rites, similar to some early forms of Yoga, have roots that date back to times possibly before Yoga came to be, and are likely to have originated from a system of Kum Nye which date back 2,500 years.
Chris Kilham, whose 1994 book, The Five Tibetans resparked the the Five Rites’ current popularity, fully describes this exercise program for “youthing”. In it we can also read a series of testimonials where people report: more energy, increase in strength and endurance, gray hair turning back to its original color, vision improvement, arthritis relief, better memory, younger look, weight loss and more extraordinary rejuvenation. People claim to “look ten years younger” and to have “never felt better.”
The Five Tibetans are highly energizing postures and exercises, liberating and enhancing the innate energetic power of the human body and mind.

12. CERTIFICATION – what does that REALLY mean?

People often want to know if they are taking courses that will lead to certification. And what would happen if they practice reflexology without some sort of ‘certification’. And why are some certifications different to others in this country? These are very valid questions. Certification has various meanings. It can be misleading and can mean different things in different places and in different circumstances..

While it may be possible to get away with any old title and certification in some countries, official designations are very strict in Canada and BC. In Canada, health jurisdictions for almost all health/healing modalities are controlled under the jurisdiction of the provinces, except for doctors, dentists, surgeons and nurses – which are governed by federal legislation and oversight.
All other healing modalities – from very mainstream to new and alternative are legislated provincially, with details and by-laws that are specific for each province, including BC.
There is an overarching concept that decides when the government is excluded from involvement. This is when a modality can be deemed to “do no harm”. Then, a modality is not mandated to go through ANY government HEALTH department scrutiny. Buyer Beware is of course always important.

14. AMY’S 1928 ARTICLE ABOUT REIKI IN A JAPANESE MAGAZINE

There’s an exceptionally enthusiastic article about learning and experiencing Reiki that I never tire of reading – and am sharing it here below.
I first read it on a popular Australian Reiki website and also on Richard Rivard’s Reiki website. This is a translation by Miyuki Iwasaki who seemed to have initially found it in a Japanese magazine in 1928 called Sunday Mainichi. The author is Shouoh Matsui (a student of Dr Chujiro Hayashi) and now James Deacon has the copyright – so please respect this and mention when sharing. (Copyright © 2003 James Deacon)

Japanese Reiki healing, education - Vancouver BC at Pacific Holistic
Reiki in 1928

This Shouou Matsui 1928 Reiki Article has two titles: “A Palm-Healing Treatment to Cure Many Diseases” and “A Treatment to Heal Diseases, Hand Healing” and sometimes called “Amy’s article”.

Shouou Matsui (1870 – 1933) had worked as a journalist before becoming well-known as a playwright and drama teacher, and supporter of the traditional form of Japanese Theatre called Kabuki. He was also one of Chujiro Hayashi’s Reiki students. Even as a playwright Mr. Matsui continued to write articles and reviews, etc, including one particular Reiki-promoting piece, published in the ‘Sunday Mainichi’ [Sunday Every Day] Magazine, on March 4th, 1928.

In response to a request from a reader who wrote: “I would like to learn about the treatment introduced in the book by Shouou Matsui in the ‘Mainichi’ on January 30th.”

Japanese Reiki healing - the originators
the initial Reiki practitioners in Japan with Master Usui

Mr. Matsui responds: “I am pleased to discuss this method. This “cure” is called “Reiki Ryoho”. It was created, or rather founded by Sensei Mikao Usui who passed away a few years ago. Currently, his students have clinics where they practice healing and train others in Reiki Ryoho. Although remarkable in its effectiveness, not many people are familiar with this treatment. Sensei Mikao Usui did not like to advertise Reiki Ryoho and so his students are also hesitant in publicizing it.”

15. What Really Happens During a Healing Session? HUMAN ENERGY FIELDS AND THE EARTHPULSE

INTRODUCTION: This presentation should not be considered as a scientific research paper. Rather it is intended as an initial exploration of a topic relatively new to the author that may be of interest to the ASD membership. Further, it is hoped that some members may wish to explore aspects of the subject on their own with some of the low- cost methods suggested at the end of the paper or some better ones of their own. It reflects my conviction that it is much more fun to participate than to simply “spectate”. Science should be recognized as a participation sport.

The ”earthpulse” was discovered and verified by several authors or the past half- century. It is known as the Schumann Frequency after its discoverer (Schumann, 1952) and consists of a magnetic pulse, which averages about 7.9 Hertz (cycles per second). It varies from 1 Hz to 40 Hz depending on several factors: Thunderstorms, solar storms, night vs. day, meteorological conditions, other solar radiation, the height of the magnetosphere above the earth, etc. It is caused by the 200 lightening strikes per second that bounce around the earth between the surface and the magnetosphere with the speed of light, producing a standing resonant wave with extremely low frequencies.

So why should healers and dowsers be interested?… continues at https://pacific-holistic.com/reiki/earth-frequencies

16. LEARNING REIKI… AT WHAT PRICE?

… a really Up-Close Look at the Fee Structures Of Present Day Reiki Courses in Canada
by Ruy da Silva, my friend, 2003

Have you ever wondered why a seminar or course can be very inexpensive or over-the-moon costly? I wondered just that when looking at the Reiki courses offered around the world. I started by looking at information from the original North American teachers. One of these, Fran Brown, one of the 22 Reiki Masters initiated by Mrs. Hawaio Takata who introduced Reiki to the West after World War II, says on her web site (1) that Mrs. Takata wanted Reiki Masters, who had been trained by her, to maintain the fees that she herself had paid for the 3 Levels in 1936 to 1938 while studying in Japan. “She asked us not to increase it, though the value of the dollar would change. The groups formed by Master Usui’s (the original Japanese teacher and master) students in Japan were commitmented for long periods of time to learn this hands-on-healing, which included paid attendance to their regular weekly meetings and practice, before continuing on to the next level of Reiki. By the time one reaches the second level in a number of years, the cost is about the same as Mrs. Takata’s.”

In “Living Reiki – Takata’s Teachings” the author, Fran Brown, stated Mrs. Takata charged her sister US$300 (by installments) for Reiki Level One. Her sister used it regularly. She found that some of her neighbours, however, who were taught for free, did not bother to use it… continues at https://pacific-holistic.com/reiki/what-price
